Retrieval of Shameless Vulnerability
In order to step out from the protection of the Shadow of the Mind, we must no longer see our vulnerabilities as weakness. In truth, vulnerability is powerful wisdom. It is the quiet wisdom of our deepest, most truthful self. It can shift entire groups of people caught in war or in a battle of wills.
Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Jesus, Martin Luther King Jr., and Buddha were all vulnerable, compassionate, exuberant leaders who radiated love and kindness. Each one, in their own way, freed themselves of the shame associated with being sensitive and instead led with sensitivity as their greatest tool. They knew that they were being called to change the world and would have to persuade others to rise in goodness and not in fear. They knew that the only way to do this was by standing firmly in altruism and benevolence, in the soft earth at their core.
You can do the same.
From the moment you first wake in the morning, you can invoke the power of your feeling body by consciously setting the intention to allow yourself to be led by your unfettered heart. You can ask that your mind let down its guard and defenses. With no protection placed on top of your softness, you will grow wild and unencumbered.
Make no mistake, being in the world without defense is not the easiest of places to be. We are used to being guarded and closed in order to prevent ourselves from being hurt and your sensitivity, when first exposed, might feel overwhelming and at times frightening. Initially, you may find yourself feeling embarrassed; people may criticize you. You may be objectified and scrutinized. This is only because people who don’t yet know this way of being, who are themselves at a loss for how to approach their heart, will be both curious and frightened, which can lead them to lash out. Consider that they might be afraid of kindness, love, and vulnerability.
Meeting a very open spirit can bring up feelings of both magnetism and contempt, but while the people you encounter may at first feel those things, eventually some of them will also come to meet the love and openness in themselves. That’s just the natural law. We are built open, but we learned to forget it. Fortunately for you and for all of us, it is also natural law that, if given time and opportunity, we will tend to edge ourselves back toward the light.
This remembering and forgetting our true nature doesn’t just happen once in a lifetime, of course. Any time you feel overwhelmed and notice that your mind is starting to pull you down into the mire, you can start reopening and remembering who you really are by realigning with intention, asking your heart to take the lead, and offering one bit of love in the face of your fear. So that you don’t become defensive or close up when people judge your openness, ask yourself how you can drop the stories the
